This working of the brain also explains midnight cravings and why we feel hungry and overeat during nighttime. When we do not sleep properly our body experiences fatigue which makes it difficult for us to indulge in exercise. Reduced physical activity with time results in weight gain as one stops burning enough calories and building muscle mass. Sleep deprivation and blood pressure also share an association as poor sleeping patterns affect the insulin level in our body. Insulin reduces the blood sugar levels and when we do not sleep properly our body releases less insulin after we eat.

Our immune system produces some infection-fighting and protective chemicals like cytokines and antibodies when we sleep and whenever any foreign bacteria and virus tries to attack our body, the immune system makes use of these antibodies and cytokines. There also exist certain kinds of cytokines that help our body with quality sleep. This further allows our immune system to build efficiency and protect our body from all kinds of illness.
Sleep deprivation weakens our immune system by preventing it from building up its forces. The immune system also experiences difficulty in fighting off foreign invaders when the body is tired and is not getting proper sleep. In the long term sleep deprivation also forces our body to take a longer time to recover from any illness. Long-term sleep deprivation also increases the risk of heart diseases and diabetes mellitus.
